The link no longer works because the head of Harlequin had it taken down. Long story short: Writer Ted Dekker wrote a post denouncing this list. I didn't even know about it until the brouhaha surrounding Ted's post spread to Chip Macgregor's blog which I follow. I was simply posting the list here for reference and archival purposes.

It's an interesting list, nothing more, depending on what one is writing.

I certainly don't have anything against using the word bishop. Why you to focused on that one word amongst the plethora of other terms in the list is beyond me. It makes me wonder if you only commented in order to start a verbal fight and that's no way to introduce yourself on this blog.

And let me be very clear on one more point: I didn't create this list and I didn't contribute to it. It really was available on the Harlequin web site, but it's unavailable now. You can read about the controversy over at Ted Dekker's blog or Chip MacGregor's if you need confirmation. Ted also posted to his Facebook.

The link posted above this entry did not produce results, and maybe one has to be a member in order to read that content. It seems that your purpose in banning the word bishop is to prevent Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists, Mormons, and Orthodox Christians from submitting stories to this sight. Is that true?

Tim,

I agree that most writers are readers first, and when I hear that one is not (very rare), I do not understand how or why they had managed to become such (I?) I mean, how would one know? I know folks with a good story in them--most people you talk to--once they hear you're a writer-will tell you of their great story, and then tell you why they haven't written it, yet. Those of us who manage to get to the page, we are rare breed. Once, on a book tour, I was asked in a radio interview: "What is the one piece of advice you have for new writers?" My answer: "Sit down and do it." It's the only thing that makes us into that "subset" you mention above. There is no other way to become a writer than by writing--don't you think?

Thanks for posting, please visit my blog some time,

Warmly, Cynn Chadwick,

Here are three more William R. Kane list additions:

* A conflict to be settled
* A mystery to be solved
* A need to be fulfilled

One of these days I must edit these together and find where they overlap. All of the additions in the comments are, of course, my additions and are not the words of Mr. Kane himself. I find them to be a good pattern to follow in constructing plots and that's why I keep finding new phrases to add.
